Classic Croque Monsieur

1.Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

2.In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Once melted, add 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until it forms a roux and turns a light golden color.

3.Gradually pour in 1 cup of whole milk while whisking to prevent lumps. Continue to whisk until the sauce thickens and comes to a gentle simmer, about 5 minutes.

4.Season the béchamel sauce with salt, black pepper, and freshly grated nutmeg. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of grated Gruyère cheese until melted and smooth. Set aside.

5.Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side, spread a generous layer of béchamel sauce, then place a slice of ham on top, followed by another slice of bread, buttered side up, to form a sandwich.

6.Repeat the process for the remaining slices of bread to create four sandwiches in total.

7.Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread a layer of béchamel sauce on top of each sandwich and sprinkle with the additional 1/2 cup of grated Gruyère cheese.

8.Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, and the bread is crispy.

9.Remove from the oven and let cool for a minute before slicing in half. Serve immediately.
