Festive Fried Christmas Pies

1.In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, softened butter, granulated sugar, salt, and baking powder. Mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

2.Gradually add the cold water, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough gently on a floured surface until smooth, about 2-3 minutes.

3.Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow it to rest.

4.After resting, roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick. Use a round cutter (about 4 inches in diameter) to cut out circles of dough.

5.Place a tablespoon of your chosen fruit filling in the center of each dough circle.

6.Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together to seal, and use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.

7.In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until hot (about 350°F or 175°C).

8.Carefully place the filled pies in the hot oil, frying a few at a time to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

9.Remove the fried pies from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

10.Brush the tops of the pies with the beaten egg for a shiny finish, and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
