Decadent Honey Milk Koeksisters Drenched in Syrup

1.In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon. Mix well to combine.

2.In another bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, milk, honey, and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.

3.Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.

4.Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

5.While the dough is resting, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of honey, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let it cool.

6.After the dough has rested, roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut the dough into strips about 1 inch wide and 4 inches long.

7.Twist each strip into a spiral shape and pinch the ends to seal them. Repeat with the remaining dough.

8.In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until hot. Carefully add the twisted dough pieces to the hot oil, frying them in batches until golden brown on all sides, about 3-4 minutes per batch.

9.Using a slotted spoon, remove the koeksisters from the oil and drain them on paper towels.

10.While still warm, dip each koeksister into the cooled syrup, ensuring they are fully coated. Let them soak for a few seconds before removing them and placing them on a serving platter.

11.Serve the koeksisters warm or at room temperature, allowing the syrup to soak in for a few minutes before enjoying.
