Mix sugar, cut up chocolate, salt, Karo syrup, and milk in a saucepan.
When mixture starts to boil, turn down heat and cook until it spins a thread, about 7 minutes.
Remove from heat, add butter, marshmallow, and vanilla.
Beat until it starts to harden, add nuts if desired.
Pour into a greased pan and let cool.
