Classic Potato and Ground Meat Casserole

1.Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Lightly grease a large baking dish.

2.Prepare the meat layer: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess fat.

3.Stir in the dry onion soup mix, water, and bring to a simmer. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly. Set aside.

4.Prepare the potato layer: In a large bowl, combine the thinly sliced potatoes, chopped onion, minced garlic, heavy cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Toss gently to coat the potatoes evenly.

5.Assemble the casserole: Spread half of the potato mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.

6.Spoon the seasoned ground meat mixture evenly over the potato layer.

7.Top with the remaining potato mixture, spreading it to cover the meat layer completely.

8.Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.

9.Bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the top.

10.Return to the oven, uncovered, and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and golden brown.

11.Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.
