Classic Lasagne

1Preparing the Meat Sauce In a large skillet, brown the ground beef (1 lb) and ground pork (½ lb) over medium heat. Add the onion (1) and garlic (2 cloves), and cook until the onion (1) is softened.

2Stir in the crushed tomatoes (1 can), tomato paste (1 can), red wine (½ cup), dried basil (1 teaspoon), dried oregano (½ teaspoon), sugar (½ teaspoon), salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3Preparing the Cheese Filling In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese (1 cup), shredded mozzarella cheese (1 cup), grated Parmesan cheese (½ cup), chopped parsley, egg (1), salt, and pepper. Mix well.

4Preparation Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

5Assembling the Lasagne Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Place 3 lasagne noodles (9) on top of the sauce.

6Spread half of the cheese filling over the noodles. Sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese (2 cups) and 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese (¼ cup).

7Repeat the layers, starting with the meat sauce, lasagne noodles, (9) and cheese filling. Top with the remaining shredded mozzarella cheese (1 cup) and grated Parmesan cheese (½ cup).

8Baking the Lasagne Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.

9Serve and Enjoy! Let the lasagne cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired.
