Classic Ham and Swiss Grilled Cheese

1Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.

2Spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.

3If using, spread Dijon mustard (1 teaspoon) on the unbuttered side of two bread slices.

4Place two bread slices, buttered side down, on a clean cutting board or plate.

5Layer 2 slices of (4) Swiss cheese evenly on each bread slice on the unbuttered side.

6Top the cheese with 2 ounces of thinly sliced (4 ounces) ham per sandwich.

7Add a light sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper over the ham.

8Place the remaining bread slices on top of each sandwich, buttered side up, pressing down gently to secure.

9Carefully transfer the sandwiches to the preheated skillet.

10Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the bottom bread is golden brown and crispy.

11Using a spatula, carefully flip each sandwich and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

12Remove sandwiches from the skillet and let them rest for 1 minute before slicing in half diagonally.

13Serve immediately while warm and enjoy your classic ham and Swiss grilled cheese sandwich.
