Croque Monsieur

Preparation Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Bechamel Sauce To make the bechamel sauce, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, until golden.

Bechamel Sauce Gradually whisk in the milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Assembly Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place 4 slices, buttered side down, on a baking sheet.

Assembly Top each slice of bread with a slice of ham and a slice of Gruyere cheese. Spoon a dollop of the bechamel sauce on top of the cheese.

Assembly Cover each sandwich with another slice of bread, buttered side up. Press lightly to seal the sandwiches.

Baking Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, until the sandwiches are golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Serving Serve the Croque Monsieur warm and enjoy!
