Classic Soft Dinner Rolls

1.In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast and 1 tablespoon of the sugar in the warm milk. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture is frothy, indicating the yeast is activated.

2.In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt.

3.Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the melted butter, egg, and the yeast mixture.

4.Mix the ingredients together until a sticky dough forms. Then turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little flour if the dough is too sticky, but keep it soft.

5.Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.

6.Punch down the risen dough to release the air. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces (about 60g each). Shape each piece into a smooth ball by tucking the edges underneath and rolling it on the counter.

7.Arrange the dough balls in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish or on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them slightly apart.

8.Cover the rolls loosely with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes, until puffy and nearly doubled.

9.Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

10.Bake the rolls for 18-22 minutes or until they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped.

11.Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with the softened butter to give them a shiny, flavorful finish.

12.Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm for the best texture and flavor.
