Mozzarella and Ham Baked Tortilla Casserole

1.Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

2.In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and sauté until they become soft and golden, about 8-10 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.

3.Butter the bottom and sides of a medium-sized baking dish (about 9x9 inches or similar).

4.Place one tortilla at the bottom of the baking dish, pressing it gently to cover the base.

5.Layer half of the sautéed onions evenly over the tortilla.

6.Add half of the ham slices evenly over the onions.

7.Place half of the fresh mozzarella slices on top of the ham.

8.Add three cheese slices over the mozzarella layer, covering as evenly as possible.

9.Repeat the layering process: place another tortilla on top, then the remaining onions, ham, mozzarella, and cheese slices.

10.Top the casserole with the last tortilla, and spread the remaining butter melted or softened evenly over the top tortilla to help it brown and crisp.

11.Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.

12.Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese inside is melted and bubbly.

13.Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving. This rest time helps the layers set for easier serving.
