Classic Basil Gimlet

1In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle the 6 fresh basil leaves (6) to release their aroma and oils, being careful not to tear them too much.

2Add 2 oz of gin (2 oz), 1 oz of freshly squeezed lime juice, and 3/4 oz of simple syrup (¾ oz) into the shaker.

3Fill the shaker with ice cubes until about two-thirds full.

4Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker feels cold.

5Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled coupe or martini glass to remove basil bits and ice shards.

6Garnish with a fresh basil (6) sprig or a lime wheel on the rim of the glass.

7Serve immediately and enjoy the refreshing herbal zest of the basil gimlet.
