Homestyle Mac and Cheese Bake

1.Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

2.Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook until al dente, about 7-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.

3.In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

4.Once melted, whisk in the flour to form a smooth roux. Cook for about 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until it turns a light golden color but does not brown.

5.Gradually whisk in the whole milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to cook and whisk until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

6.Remove the sauce from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses until fully melted and smooth.

7.Season the cheese sauce with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and mustard powder if using. Adjust seasoning to taste.

8.Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce, stirring gently to coat all the pasta evenly.

9.Transfer the mac and cheese mixture to a greased 8x8-inch baking dish.

10.In a small bowl, mix the grated Parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs together. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the mac and cheese.

11.Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese sauce is bubbly.

12.Remove from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set slightly.
