Homemade Artisan Bread

1In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water (2 cups), sugar (2 teaspoons), and active dry yeast (2 teaspoons). Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy and bubbly.

2Add the olive oil (1 teaspoon) to the yeast mixture and gradually stir in the flour, one cup at a time, until a sticky dough forms.

3Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add more flour if needed to prevent sticking.

4Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.

5Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and place a Dutch oven or baking dish with a lid in the oven to heat up.

6Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down to release the air bubbles and shape it into a round loaf.

7Carefully place the dough into the preheated Dutch oven, cover with the lid, and bake for 30 minutes.

8Remove the lid and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

9Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
