Artisan Crusty Bread with a Soft Interior

1.In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2.Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until a shaggy dough forms.

3.Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

4.Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a floured surface. Gently knead it for about 1-2 minutes to shape it into a ball.

5.Place the dough ball into a lightly greased bowl, cover it again, and let it rise for another 30-60 minutes until it puffs up again.

6.Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Place a Dutch oven (with the lid) inside the oven to heat up for about 30 minutes.

7.Once the dough has risen, carefully remove the hot Dutch oven from the oven. Gently place the dough into the pot (you can sprinkle some flour on the bottom to prevent sticking).

8.Cover the pot with the lid and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the lid and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the bread is golden brown and crusty.

9.Remove the bread from the Dutch oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
