Classic South African Bobotie-Inspired Beef Casserole

1.Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

2.Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.

3.Stir in the curry powder and ground turmeric, cooking for another minute until fragrant.

4.Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

5.While the beef is cooking, soak the slice of white bread in the milk until soft. Squeeze out the excess milk and crumble the bread into the beef mixture. Reserve the milk for later use.

6.Stir in the raisins, slivered almonds, chutney, lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.

7.Transfer the beef mixture into a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.

8.In a small bowl, beat the eggs with the reserved milk and a pinch of salt. Pour this mixture over the beef in the baking dish.

9.Place the bay leaves on top of the casserole.

10.Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the egg topping is set and golden brown.

11.Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Remove the bay leaves before serving.
